[MV REVIEW] BEAST'S SHADOW: THE PAINFUL AND BEAUTIFUL LOVE

Hi, guys,
whoever you are,
finally, BEAST is back...

Here, I will share some of my thoughts about 'Shadow' MV.  Check the MV first:

For this time I won't literally reveal the significance of things and stuffs found there. But, I will give more attention to the man and woman's roles in this MV. Both of them have significantly symbolized the 'shadow'.

As all of us know that the man with tattoo and black layer appears first on the scene. Then, followed by the appearance of the girl's face while the black layer which covers her moves slowly. After that we see the girl in white gown walks from an altar brings the fire or flame. Note these, the man wears black shorts, completely black, while the girl wears white gown. I have a unique insight about the snake which appears after the man and woman. This snake has symbolized the changes in life. So, it can be dragged a line that the life of those man and woman have somehow changed.

But, let's see the one who changes is none other than the girl. The man is staying there, completely unchanged. The man here has the role as the shadow, meanwhile the girl is the one who has become the 'shadow' after there is no light shine on her. You can see when the girl walks in the temple he wears white and brings the flame, but after she finds out the place where the 'shadow' (the man) appears, she slowly changes becoming a 'shadow' as well. That is the moment when the mirror captures her in black gown, although in fact he wears white gown. And the next moment is the 'shadow'-man embraces her, brings her to the state of being a shadow.

When Dongwoon appears and the mirror is broken, we can see that the girl has already had no limitation of her being the shadow or her being her real self. She has already tied with the shadow. It is shown by the way both the white gown and black gown girls walk from a mirror to another one. And, when they meet, we can see that the black gown girl has already had the tattoo on her face. She has completely become the 'shadow'. She even dances along with the man. They look awesomely beautiful and match each other. The 'shadow' dances beautifully in their (her) sadness.

So, basically this MV is showing us the (soul) inner journey (or you can say, the soul contemplation). The flame or the fire she holds in the beginning of the MV shows that at first she has a strong feeling or desire of life (and love) but the moment there is no light anymore (or lover of hers) she starts to feel weakened. She starts to feel that without the one she loves, she is no longer shown the existence of a human. She feels more like a 'shadow' which can disappear easily because there is no light to shine on her anymore. Without the light, the 'shadow' will be also slowly erased. That is why, in the end, the girl disappears, left with smile. The sadness of love, yet painful, still beautiful.

Besides, the director also shows how broken the upper world (reconsider it that the temple is the under world) when the BEAST dances  there, means that actually that is the end of the girl's soul life. She is there, alive, but no longer the same anymore as slowly everything around her breaks her heart.

Okay, that is what I get from this MV so far. I think this is such an amazing idea to put the 'shadow' story line as if it were just a random thing going on between so many (many many many) stuffs forced to put on the MV, and also the beautiful dance movement of the boys.

Let's support BEAST, everyone!
Sorry, if it just a shallow interpretation hahah.
Have a nice day, BEAUTY-deul!
Oh and please drop some comments of your thought, guys. I want to know...

  1. as usual, I like your review. You don't just randomly take things and symbolization from the MV.
Yeah, I think the girl is trapped in the shadow. The shadow of the man and herself. The white gown girl is trapped in the mirror (the reflection of black gown girl).
True, If there is no light, there will be no shadow. Shadow will follow you wherever you go as long as there is light. But, if the light is gone, the shadow will be gone too... or else you will be trapped in the shadow as well... So thoughtful. So deep. I think this MV is so deep. many interpretation can go beyond it.

    1. me too. I thought Midnight Sun mini album is alot better than this one. hehehe. but, fika, hey you realize, one of the songs in this album has the feeling of my 'I Don't Know Love' fanfic... the one entitled 'how to love'. even the album title too makes me think of IDKL hehe, 'hard to love, how to love' hehehe xD
